Bathroom Lighting Zones in Australia: What You Need to Know

When it comes to bathroom lighting in Australia, safety is paramount. Bathrooms are wet, humid environments, so electrical fittings need to meet strict standards. The Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000) divide the bathroom into zones based on how close fittings are to water sources, with each zone requiring specific Ingress Protection (IP) ratings to ensure safety and durability.

Below is a clear guide to each zone and its requirements:

Zone 0: Inside the Bath or Shower Base

This is the most high-risk area inside the bath or shower itself where fittings may come into direct contact with water.

Lighting Requirements:

  • Maximum 12V low-voltage fittings only

  • Minimum IPX7 rating, meaning fittings are completely immersion-proof

Zone 1: Directly Above the Bath or Shower

Covers the area directly above the bath or shower, extending up to 2.5m from the floor and within 1200mm of fixed plumbing like the shower head.

Lighting Requirements:

  • Minimum IPX4 rating (protection against water splashes)

  • IPX5 recommended if exposed to water jets

Zone 2: Surrounding Areas and Basins

Includes the area 600mm around Zone 1 horizontally and up to 2.25m high, plus a 150mm radius around basins, extending 400mm above them.

Lighting Requirements:

  • Minimum IPX4 rating required

Outside Zones: Beyond Zones 0, 1, and 2

Covers all other areas of the bathroom not already included in the above zones.

Lighting Requirements:

  • No legal IP rating requirement, but

  • IP44 or higher recommended for better protection in humid environments

Understanding IP Ratings

What is an IP Rating?
The letters IP stand for Ingress Protection, followed by two numbers:

  • The first digit = protection against solids

  • The second digit = protection against liquids

Here are some common ratings:

  • IP44: Protected against small solid objects and splashing water

  • IPX4: Protected against water splashes from any direction

  • IPX5: Protected against water jets

  • IPX7: Protected against immersion in water up to 1m deep

Always Consult a Licensed Electrician

While this guide gives you the essentials, bathroom lighting installation must comply with Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000). Always hire a qualified electrician to ensure your fittings meet safety and regulatory requirements.
